Steelhead is a handsome young buck. I’ve been excited about him since he was in the nest. I love his head and ear and was also interested in using the darker version steel to try and even out the ticking from some of our more chestnutty looking steels. Since we decided to stop working on steels however, we’ve made the tough decision to let him go. He’s got really nice structure and type overall, nicely furred and shaped ears, and a great head. I’d fault him a little for being less smooth over his backside than our other rabbits and having slightly uneven ticking pattern over the body, which seems to go hand in hand with the darker versioned steels. He carries dilute, so could be great for making some blue steels as well. He’d pair well with Weedle, our blue (genetically gold-tipped steel) doe also available in the auction.
He’s done great on the show tables with limited showing, earning the legs he needs to be a grand champion. He also placed in the top 10 steel senior bucks as a junior that we bumped up to senior because at time of entry he was a couple ounces over 2 pounds. In hindsight, I wish we had left him as a junior, where he could have been more competitive, because he dropped some of that weight before the show. Either way, the senior class was tough competition, so we were pleased to place in the top 10.
